Image of Daniel McCarthy - presbyterium - apseApse

The foundations of the earlier rounded apse are visible in the foreground with the later squared apse just beyond, at Binham Priory, Norfolk, England (link). The new configuration allowed the end wall to be opened with a large window and the altar to be placed near, under its morning light. The seating for the clergy, traditionally along the wall of the rounded apse, was moved in such churches to the quire side.
